Dear Wapato High School Families,
My name is David Blakney, and I am thrilled to be the principal at Wapato High School for the 2018-2019 school year. It is a great honor to serve the students, staff, and families of Wapato High School as well as the community of Wapato. This will be my eleventh year in education, and my first year as the principal at WHS. For the last two years, I have served as the assistant principal/athletic director here at Wapato High School. During my time at Wapato, I have learned that we have a great staff, fantastic students and a community that supports our work in education.
In the past few years, we have enjoyed high levels of achievement because of the work that has been put in by the staff, students and the support from our community. With our team continuing this work, we will have the opportunity to make Wapato High School an even better place moving forward. A few areas that we will be focusing on during the upcoming school year are: student engagement, positive relationships, student attendance, and our Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) program. These areas will help us to not only meet the needs of all of our students, but to push them to higher levels of achievement. Along with our work in the classroom, we have a number of great clubs, athletic teams and activities available to students outside of the classroom. We encourage all of our students to be involved in our extra-curricular activities in some way because we know the more students are involved in school the higher levels of success they will achieve.
As the upcoming school year quickly approaches, please mark these important dates on your calendar:
- Monday August 13 - Fall sports parent night at 6:30 PM in the WHS Commons
- Wednesday August 15 – Football and Cheer Practices Start
- Monday August 20 – Cross Country, Girls Soccer, and Volleyball Practices Start

- Tuesday August 28 – WHS Open House 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
- Friday August 31– Home Varsity Football Game against Wahluke at 7:00 PM

With the staff, students and community that we have in Wapato, I am confident that this is going to be a great year at Wapato High School. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns that arise. I am available my email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 509-877-3138. Thank you for supporting WHS!
